About Athelltics PNG

The Papua New Guinea Athletics Union (Athletics PNG) is the national governing body responsible for overseeing all track and field, cross country, and road running activities throughout the country. Affiliated with World Athletics and the Oceania Athletics Association (OAA), the union plays a central role in managing national competitions, developing athlete pathways, and ensuring Papua New Guinea’s representation in regional and international meets.

Athletics PNG is one of the country’s most successful sporting organizations, having produced many of Papua New Guinea’s top athletes, including Olympians Toea Wisil, Rellie Kaputin, and Nelson Stone. The sport has consistently been a major medal contributor for Team PNG at the Pacific Games and Mini Pacific Games, showcasing the nation’s strength in sprinting, jumping, and middle-distance events. Through its structured programs, Athletics PNG identifies and nurtures young talent from schools and provinces, preparing them for high-level competition.

In addition to athlete development, Athletics PNG also focuses on coaching education, officiating, and community-based programs to promote athletics at the grassroots level. The organization works closely with schools, provincial associations, and international partners to build capacity and provide opportunities for athletes to train and compete overseas. The union’s headquarters are in Port Moresby, and it continues to play a vital role in shaping the future of athletics in Papua New Guinea.
